Comic Book FAQs

I've been asked many questions about the comic book niche at my contact me page . But the questions and the answers I provide are just between me and the askee. Now that I have access to an interactive module in my admin area, I am creating this page for your interactive questions and comments.

This will be quicker and easier in getting your questions answered by me and/or by others with more in depth knowledge than I have. I have wanted a public page like this for quite some time on this site. Now you have it at your disposal!!

So if you have questions, or answers to others’ questions or just want to make a comment, now is your chance. Consider this page kind of a combination of an FAQ and a forum.

Here are a few comic book FAQs that have come through my contact me previously. The easy to use form is below that.

So, without further ado, let's jump into comic book FAQs!

Question: I have an action comic book no. 1 june 1938 in mint condition. No creases, pages are not yellowed, and is still in plastic. How do I go about selling this?

Answer: First off, you are talking about the most revered comic book in the industry. An action comic #1 (First appearance of Superman) from 1938 is very, very valuable. I am pretty sure you don't have an original. You would have a reprint, which may come in plastic, but the original you wouldn't have.

Reprints have come out in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. In the 1970's they were called The Famous First Edition and in near mint condition could be worth some money. Go to eBay and search on Action Comics #1 Reprint and look at what comes up. If you feel you have a near mint or better, you could try setting up an auction to see what kind of interest you may generate. Another place to check is Heritage Auctions.

Or you could go to a local comic store and ask. But have an idea of what your comic is worth. If a comic shop owner smells newbie with no knowledge, they could, but not always, try to low ball you. Ask about selling on consignment.

Question: I just found in my basement the "Reign of the Supermen!" 1993. It says its number 78 but it comes with 4 more. It is sealed and never been opened. There are collector cards in there and I am just curious as to what the value of this would be. It is in mint condition and I looked around the web and couldn’t find one other person with this complete set.

Answer: You have a very interesting question and I don't really know how to answer it. After some research I did find several items on eBay.

It looks like this collection is worth in the range of $20 give or take. But I couldn't find this package of comics along with trading cards. I guess if you were interested in selling that package you would have to try an auction on eBay or one of the other comic auction sites (Heritage Comics for example). Give a good description and see what kind of offers you would get.

Another idea is to try downtown at any local comic book shop and see if any of the owners have an idea. Sorry I couldn't help much more.

Question: I have a Popeye comic book copyright 1960. What is it worth? It’s in better than good condition.

Answer: The best I can pin point it with the info you gave me is issues 61 - 65 (before 10/62) are worth $5 in good condition (2.0) to $37 in very fine condition (8.0).

Comment: Dave, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your informative 5 days course. I like many people have been into comic books for years, and as a child had so very many. By day 3 of your course I found myself refreshing my inbox in the hope that the next installment would arrive quickly. Thank you again for the advice and I'll be sure to visit your site again. Take care Kudos to you Simon..
